SELR'S LLAMA PERSONAL.....URGENT RESCUE NEEDS IN OHIO

We have been notified of an urgent situation in the Toledo area of northwest Ohio.  There are 80 llamas belonging to an individual who is ill and can no longer care for the animals.  Evidently it has been a long spiral downwards because reports are that there are a number of dead animals on the property and genders are co-mingled.  We have been assured (although we have as yet been unable to substantiate) that the owner is making sure that they do have hay and water every couple of days but the animals need to be removed as quickly as possible.

At present we do not know specifics regarding condition, ages, genders, etc.  Some are registered, some are not.  There are intact males, some geldings, females and females with crias.  Some of the females may be pregnant.  Some can be handled, some have never been handled.  They have not been shorn for 2 years and there are not enough halters and leads for them.

There are a group of folks from Ohio and surrounding areas headed up there this Sunday to evaluate the situation and attempt to determine the relative health of the animals as well as number, tag and photograph them.  Our Ohio coordinator, Helen Carpenter will be heavily involved in this assessment and has been working hard to muster as much support as possible.  These animals will NOT necessarily all be handled via SELR although we intend to provide as much support as possible through our network of foster homes and transport volunteers.

We will be adding a special section to the SELR web site once we have more information in order to post current information regarding the overall situation as well as information on individual animals which are available.  Again, SELR is not the primary responder in this situation and any animals in the special section will be available as a "re-home" rather than SELR adoption unless otherwise specified.

If you think you can provide space for one or two more animals via a foster situation, you would like to add to your existing herd, or if you are in a position to donate materially or financially, please contact Helen Carpenter at hcarpenter@heather-hill-llamas.com, phone 330-325-2421, cell 330-631-5703.

Please feel free to cross post far and wide.
